Question:

Advice given in this forum a while back: put labels on the bottles. Apparently, the security folks are much more suspicious of unlabelled bottles than labelled ones, even if they’re home-made labels. — =Spencer W. I’ve never labelled the bottles I carried-on, and my beers have never got a second glance from the security folks. Having said that, Spencer’s advice is sound…the more you can do to allay their suspicions, the better. have fun gak — ATTMAIL: …!attmail!gakhaus!gak |—SHARX–| O nobili, deus trux

I just brewed my first batch of homebrew, and I would like to take a few bottles with me when I fly east to visit home.  I was planning on wrapping six 12oz bottles carefully and putting them in my carryon. Are there any laws against this?  Will they say anything when they x-ray my bag?  Or am I just worrying without need?

I came back from Italy with a bottle of homemade wine (from scratch, not extract :)  I didn’t declare it and security didn’t give me a problem as it went through xrays.  I’ve also stuffed my carryon with 8 bottles of wine on a trip from CA, no problem.  Becareful how you pack it. When I first started brewing mead I took a bottle to a friend in Chicago. The mead was supposed to be flat, but evidently had some carbonation. As I boarded the plane the cork popped out.  Fortunately the bottle was upright and I quickly stuffed it back in before the fragrant aroma became to noticable. I had to spend the whole flight pushing the cork back in.  It survived more or less OK.  And no I didn’t get any questions from security either. (My favorite one was, when 3.5in disk were only about 1-2 years old, "What is that?", "Its a computer disk", very seriously: "Floppy disks are larger". "Its a ‘Micro-floppy’".)   George Paap I am my beliefs. (which almost certainly are not those of my employer)

Not as far as air carriers go, I don’t think.  But I’ll give you a tip. If you have a hard time getting them through security, stop and go back to the airline ticket counter and ask for assistance.  I’ve done this for a number of things (oversize objects, computer hard drives (can you turn it on? no not without the rest of the computer)…in each case a representitive of the airline escorted me back through (signing some log form at the checkpoint). -Ron
