Sunshine and wine

Question:

Hello, I have just returned to winemaking after 20 years and 2 moves.Have been lurking and learning here for a short time and have a question-with 3 kids and a small house I am limited in a good spot for primary ferment. The most convenient is on the kitchen counter but it receives filtered sunshine for a few hours in the evening. My primary vat is white poly plastic from a good wine store. For secondary I put it in the basement where it is cooler, darker, and out of the way. Will the sunshine hurt my wine for this brief period? Thanks,Doug.

Response:

Hi Doug    Why not just totally ferment your wine down in the basement there are many yeast that can ferment at very cold temp. and you also might enjoy the wines more due to the slower fermentation.                             Bob

I’m not sure how much the short period of sunshine will harm the wine. However I brew and make wine & always wrap my fermenters in black trash bags. Yesterday, at my local wine supply store, I saw an electrical tape device that wrapped around the fermentor that kept the temperature at about 75 deg F.  Now I can make my wine in more reasonable locations without worrying about the temp. Ron
