Best "book" to help start off a beginner?

Question:

I’m looking for a good book, one that will help a person start off right, on the subject of making wine.  I’ve tried it the past two seasons with no luck.  There is obviously something I am missing here, but I haven’t been able to find it.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance, Don

Response:

You might try Grapes into Wine by Philip Wagner.  Good luck. Clement Butt

I put my mortgage money into publishing a booklet for beginners called GETTING STARTED IN WINEMAKING written by JE Underhill. Since August 1993 it has sold 19,000 copies (BEST SELLER TWO YEARS RUNNING) and it contains the following topics: – simple but complete instructions for using 28-day wine kits – introduces winemakign from juice, grapes and 48 non grape fruit wine recipes – How to use a hydrometer and acid testing in 6 easy steps – how to calculate parts per million and other math for winemakers. – the proper use of sorbate sulphite and tables on sugar and acid adjustments (FOR EXAMPLE) you can raise the acidity of a wine by .1 by adding 1 gram of tartaric acid to 1 litre of wine. There is a section onfiltration and one on how to fix common fermentationproblems. Ask you local wine supply store for a copy or mail $5.00 plus $1.00 (for postage and handling) to me at 28 Otten Dr. Nepean, ON Canada K2J 1J2.(Cheque or money order, no stamps.) P.S. I’m looking for more US and European Distributors. Please private Paul Jean Jr. Publisher BETTER WINEMAKING MAGAZINE and GETTING STARTED in WINEMAKING by JE Underhill
