yakima

Question:

i am loking for general info on the yakima washington area.i would like to correspond with someone there. hows the weather? what is the community like? whats great about yakima? please reply.

I live a few hours away from Yakima and visit it occasionally. It has around 60,000 people and owes much of its existence to the fruit industry (tree fruits and grapes), as well as related industries such as wine-making.  It’s hot desert country; without irrigation none of the fruit industry would be there. Winters are relatively mild (there *are* exceptions) and summers can push the mercury past the 100 (F!) mark. You didn’t ask about the fishing, but since this was posted to rec.outdoors.fishing.fly ….. There is good trout fishing in the Yakima River, which flows right through town. I suspect that the fishing near the city of Yakima is probably okay, but most of the attention seems to be focussed on upstream sections (e.g. around Ellensburg). Of course, this may be because fishermen heading into the Yakima Valley from Seattle get to Ellensburg first <g. There’s also steelhead/ salmon fishing in the Columbia, in the lower reaches of the Yakima near its junction with the Columbia, and in (relatively) nearby rivers such as the Cowlitz, Klickitat and Wenatchee. You’ll also find lots of lakes and ponds all across the Columbia basin; most have trout, but a few have bass and panfish. As for "culture", I can’t address that, not having to live there on a regular basis. There seem to be all the amenities you’d normally find in a city of its size. A large percentage of the agricultural workforce is of Mexican descent, so there are establishments providing the foods, music, etc preferred by these folks. I seem to recall that there is a community college located in town. And, I suspect that the locals head to Seattle if they can’t find what they want in Yakima. 3798 Woodland Drive     voice: (604) 368-9315 Trail, BC               data:  (604) 368-9341

Hello Larry, I have spent alot of time fising the Yakima.  It is a nice place to fish.  The surrounding communities are O.K.  If you are interested in some more information, I have family in Ellensburg and a good friend of mine guide’s in the area.  I am not sure he has a computer but if you are interested, you can correspond with him via the good old postal service.
